SCHOOLS OF CHOICE FAQ's

What is Schools of Choice?
Schools of Choice is an opportunity for out-of-district students to attend Western
Schools.

Can anyone apply?
Any student residing within Jackson County or outside Jackson County but in a school
district contiguous to the Jackson County Intermediate School District may apply for
Schools of Choice.

Do we have to apply for Schools of Choice each year?
Once accepted as Schools of Choice students, those students are guaranteed a place in our
schools through high school graduation and does not require re-application from year to year.

What is the process?
Out-of-district students must make application to attend Western Schools no later than
June 30 for fall enrollment and during the first two weeks in January for second semester
enrollment, if applicable. Due to the limited space available in our schools, students are
randomly drawn from the pool of applications for placement wherever space is available.

When and how do we find out if our out-of-district students can attend Western
Schools?
Applications are accepted through June 30 for fall enrollment and during the first two weeks
in January for second semester enrollment, if applicable. A building representative makes calls
to all families, regardless of whether their students were able to be placed in our schools or not,
within two days of the application deadline.  Families unsuccessful in receiving placement and
families unable to be reached by phone will be notified by mail.

Where do I begin?
Applications for Schools of Choice can be printed from the link attached to this website
OR can be picked up from the Western School District Administration Office, 1400 S.
Dearing Road, Parma, between the hours of 7:30-4:00, Monday through Friday
(call 841-8100 for summer hours), and must be returned/completed to the
Administration Office
no later than June 30 for fall enrollment or by the end of the first
two weeks in January for second semester enrollment, if applicable.
.
What kind of information do we need to complete the application?
The application asks for basic information on the student i.e. name, address, birth date,
entering grade level, school district of residence, school last attended, names of/if other
immediate family members are currently attending our schools, parent contact
information, previous school documentation of disciplinary history and special education
needs, and requires signatures of the student's parent/guardian and the school official
providing the disciplinary and special education needs information from the last school
attended.

Do you provide transportation for out-of-district students?
Schools of Choice students are provided the opportunity to use the Western School
District transportation system, free of charge, to and from any established Western
School District bus stop. We will not travel outside the district to transport Schools of
Choice students.

Does a Schools of Choice transfer affect my student's eligibility to play high school
sports?
A student in grades 9-12 who "transfers" into the district is not eligible to participate in
an interscholastic sport for one full semester.

If I have additional questions?
Please call the Western School District Administration Office at 841-8100.
